Probably everyone who has sincerely worked on himself has had the experience of coming to a new and deeper understanding of an idea with which he had been familiar for years. This happened to me late in 1981 with respect to the idea of attitudes. Suddenly, I truly understood that not only were my attitudes the strings which connected me to the world, but that they were subjective and in that sense arbitrary. Consequently, there was no external reason not to replace existing attitudes with others which would be more useful to my evolution. For the next ten years, the struggle to do this was the focus of my personal work … No matter what else is being discussed, on some level each of these essays records a search for right, or useful, attitudes with respect to a particular subject and an effort to discover how to adopt and use them …
